Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority wins Expanding Excellence Award for Best Smart Infrastructure Project

Ottawa, ON—Albuquerque BernalilloCounty Water Utility Authority has won the 2013 CS Week Expanding ExcellenceAward for Best Smart Infrastructure Projectamong utilities that generate less than $400 million in annual revenue.


The Water Authority launched its smart grid projectin 2010 with four goals in mind: encourage further water conservation amongresidents and businesses, meet a state-mandated target of reducing daily per-capitawater consumption to 150 gallons by 2014, streamline operations, and improve customerservice.


To help meet its targets, the Water Authorityimplemented Sensus FlexNext AMI technology alongside MeterSense and CustomerConnect , the meter data management(MDM) and customer engagement solutions from Harris Utilities. The utilitylaunched a trial of its smart infrastructure on 900 meters in 2010. A secondphase that incorporated 40,000 more followed in 2011. The Water Authorityreported significant benefits almost immediately after implementation. It:

-           identified and repaired water leaks at the homes of eight consumers,

-           virtually eliminated manual meter reads and in so doing, reduceddata-collection costs and increased bill accuracy,

-           built a virtual model of its distribution infrastructure to gain aclearer picture of system load and losses, and

-           met the state-mandated conservation target three years ahead ofschedule.


That’s not all. The Water Authority has drawn onMeterSense and CustomerConnect to improve service to consumers. Customerservice representatives use MeterSense to access account data in real time andresolve concerns from end users in seconds. CustomerConnect helps consumers understandhow changes to their usage habits affect their monthly water bills and learnabout new conservation initiatives created by the Water Authority and the Stateof New Mexico.
